I am currently Associate Professor of Economics at the School of Liberal Studies, Azim Premji University, Bangalore, where I also head the Centre for Sustainable Employment. Until 2016 I was an Assistant Professor at the University of Massachusetts, Boston. I did my PhD work at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. My principal fields of concentration are Poverty and Inequality, Informality, Employment, Structural Change, and Political Economy of Knowledge. I work primarily on the Indian economy.
I have taught undergraduate and MA courses at UMass-Boston, UMass-Amherst and at Bucknell University. These include Introduction to Macroeconomics, Economic Development, Economic Principles, Political Economy, Political Economy of Development and, Gender and Development.
I hold a previous PhD in Neurobiology from Duke University (Durham, NC). I switched fields in 2005, after becoming interested in problems of economic development.
