About Me

I am currently Professor of Economics at the School of Arts and Sciences, Azim Premji University, Bangalore, where I also head the Centre for Sustainable Employment. Until 2016 I was an Assistant Professor at the University of Massachusetts, Boston. I did my PhD work at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. My principal fields of concentration are Poverty and Inequality, Informality, Employment, Structural Change, and Political Economy of Knowledge. I work primarily on the Indian economy.

I have taught BA and MA courses at UMass-Boston, UMass-Amherst, Bucknell University, and Azim Premji University. These include Principles of Economics (Micro and Macro), Economic Development, Political Economy (BA and MA), Political Economy of Development, Gender and Development, Microeconomics of Development (MA) and Macroeconomics of Development (MA).

I hold a previous PhD in Neurobiology from Duke University (Durham, NC). I switched fields in 2005, after becoming interested in problems of economic development.
